Traditional Scottish Beef Dumplings Recipe

This is a recipe for beef dumplings. Also known as Highland Beef Balls they are a relatively simple fried beef dish. If you are stuck for a quick meal time idea this recipe will give you some ideas on "what to do with beef".

Beef Dumplings

Ingredients:
1lb beef mince(as good quality as possible)
1&1/2 oz onions(chopped)
6oz shredded beef suet
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon mace
1 small egg (lightly beaten)
Oatmeal for coating
Seasoning (Salt & Pepper)

Method:
Mix the mince, suet and onions in a bowl. Season and add the spices. Introduce the egg in order to bind the meat, then remove from bowl and shape into balls. Don't make the balls to thick as the meat won't cook properly on the inside. (1 &1/2 inch max).

Roll in the oatmeal then fry in lard until golden brown (approx 8-10 minutes). Traditionally they would have been served with Mash potato but some may find the dish a little dry. If you do, it is acceptable to use a fresh tomato sauce poured over the beef.

As with all recipes which involve cooking and baking a sensible approach must be taken especially when dealing with warm or hot (temperature) ingredients. If you are unable to take due care, please do not attempt to make any of these recipes. All recipes are tried at your own risk.
